Move-Outs

If prolonged exposure to the loss event could cause additional damage to your contents, your contractor requests relocation of the contents, or the safety of your contents is a concern, a move-out may be recommended. In these situations, SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties is trained to properly inventory, move out and control the contents from the structure during the cleaning, restoration and deodorization process.

Electronics Cleaning

Smoke residues can contain acids that corrode metal surfaces when moisture is also present. If the residues are not removed, corrosion can eat away at the metal casing and can ultimately cause electronic failure in the device. We can clean the outside casing correctly, as well as refer your equipment to a qualified electronics vendor.

Preparing for the stormy season!

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Cold temperatures can create a negative impact on your home and property; it’s key that you take the necessary precautions for your home not only for cold weather, but for storm season as well in order to limit potential risks and damages. When doing routine maintenance, it’s always better to be prepared and go the extra step to insure that you are limiting risks of damage. It’s important to be thorough while inspecting your building.

    • Basements and crawlspaces in your home can be areas where heat escapes. Be sure to seal and insulate around any HVAC ducts, basement windows, and any exposed pipes.
    • Try installing foam-rubber gaskets behind electrical outlets & switch covers on exterior walls.
    • If you don’t use your fireplace, plug the flue with an inflatable plug, or another item, that is safe and limits possible water to entry into your home.
    • Make sure you replace any broken windows, re-putty any loose window panes, seal around windows and door trims, or use weather stripping for windows that are opened. This minor step can make a world of a difference in heat efficiency and preventing water intrusion.
    • For attic spaces it’s best to weather strip & insulate the access door properly, seal around your chimney with metal flashing or a high temperature sealant, seal around plumbing vents, seal any holes between the heated space of your home and the attic, and don’t forget to insulate any exposed water pipes!

If water damage occurs in your home due to extreme weather or any other means, make sure to call SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties where the crew is trained and experienced in dealing with not only average water damage but storm water damages to buildings as well.  (360)533-8667

Summer sometimes brings storms, are you prepared?

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

During long summer days, it’s easy to forget that there is always a possibility of a downpour! Air conditioning maintenance and air duct cleaning are essential for the inside of the home, but don’t neglect the outside! Summer rains can bring high damaging winds that can dislodge branches from trees which may look to find a new home...on top of yours! So, it’s essential that after every troublesome storm, an inspection to your rain gutters is performed. It is simple enough - all you will need is a ladder, gloves, protective goggles, water hose and a scoop. Let’s dive in!

Cleaning your gutters can be performed in 3 easy steps:

Climb the ladder and start scooping! Start from the end closest to the drain outlet and remove any debris with your scoop, working away from the drain outlet. For faster cleanup in the end, toss the offending material into a bucket on the ground.

With your water hose in tow, spray a steady stream of water through the gutters towards the drain outlet. This is much easier using a hose with a pressure gauge for high and low power, but any will work just as well.

Check your drainpipes for any blockages. Hopefully any potential blocks are minimized by scooping out the debris before it makes it into the pipes. However, there are instances where the rain storms forced material into the pipes. If you see a trickle instead of a flow coming from your pipes, use the hose at the top of the gutter and spray directly into the outlet. For harder to reach items, try a plumber’s snake.

Use these quick and easy tips to ensure your rain gutters are ready for any storms Mother Nature wants to throw your way.

Winter & Frozen Pipes

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the back-flow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.

To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:

Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.

Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.

When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.

Keep your heat on and if you leave always keep the heat to at least 55 degrees.

Apply heating tape to pipes.  It works like an electric blanket for your pipes.  There are also sleeves for your pipes that you can put on them to keep them from freezing.

Add extra insulation to areas of the home without it and where the pipes are.  Generally basements and or attics are the places where there wouldn't be enough insulation installed.

Is it really that bad? It was just a small fire.

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized.  Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places.  Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties technicians are provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage.  SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties technicians do not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; they seek out and remove the sources of odor.

Remember to call your SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific County for your needs.  We will be there for you anytime and any day.  (360) 533-8667

Ways that water can cause further damage after a fire.

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

A fire can wreak havoc on your home, but the flames aren’t the only things that can cause destruction to your property. Often times, water can cause as many or, in some cases, more problems as the fire damage itself.

1. Ruptured Pipes

During a fire, temperatures in your home can become extreme, and the intense heat can cause burst pipes and plumbing malfunctions. Falling debris can also lead to warped or broken pipes. Even if parts of your home are spared from burning, flooding can cause water damage throughout your residence, especially to walls and flooring.

2. Storm Damage

Fire damage often includes structural problems to the roof and windows. This can mean that water will be able to enter the home during any inclement weather that occurs before repairs can be completed. Placing tarps on the roof and boarding any broken windows can help mitigate these potential problems.

3. Water From Fire Hoses

When firefighters go to work to extinguish a burning house, their biggest ally is water. While absolutely necessary, the thousands of gallons that can come from a fire hose can leave behind a great deal of residual water that will need to be cleaned and removed. The longer this water sits stagnant, the greater the potential for incurring more damage and costly repairs. Fire extinguishers used by emergency responders can also contain compressed water, which can also leave behind destruction.

If you are dealing with the heartbreak of a fire in your dwelling, you are probably preparing to combat the fire damage you have suffered. However, you should also make a plan to deal with the destruction that water may have caused to your property, as well. Contact SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties at (360)533-8667 to help you restore your home to the safe haven you deserve.

Tips to prevent a fire!

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Dealing with the aftermath of a fire in your home or business can be costly, time-consuming, and emotional. This is why it’s important to take certain precautions to prevent or decrease the likelihood of a fire. These helpful tips can reduce the probability of a fire in your home or office;

1.       Watch your cooking!  You should always stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Remember to never let young children near the stove or oven while you are cooking.

2.       Give space heaters space! It’s best to keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.

3.       Keep matches and lighters out of reach! The safest place to keep matches and lighters is in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.

4.       Inspect electrical cords! You should replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs, or loose connections.

5.       Be careful when using candles! Be sure to keep candles at least one foot away from anything that will burn.

Not all fires are caused by things we have control of. Some fires can be caused by unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents. Just in case one of these catastrophes may happen, keep in mind that a fire escape plan for your crew or family is always a good idea! Try practicing it at least twice a year. In the event of fire damages SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties is available around the clock to offer exceptional response time and trained professionals ready to restore your property!

Snow Birds

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Snow Birds! This is a term I’m sure we have all heard but may not know what it means. According to Wikipedia, Snowbirds are typically retirees who wish to avoid the snow and cold temperatures of northern winter, but maintain ties with family and friends by staying there the rest of the year. In recent years, younger people with jobs tied to seasonal tourists often migrate southward, following the tourist season to southern resorts. Some are also business owners who have a second home in a warmer location or whose business can be easily moved from place to place. Many families in the United States often spend their Christmas holiday time (up to 2 weeks) at beach resorts in Florida and California.

Getting away from the winter definitely sounds amazing from time to time but make sure you take the proper steps before running away from Jack Frost and properly prepare your home.

Make a List. Check it Twice

Look carefully at the interior and exterior of your property and make note of everything that needs to be done. Come up with an action plan that will also come in handy once you open the house again. When you return to your home at a later date, you more than likely will have forgotten several tasks that will now need to be undone.

Turn Off Your Water at the Exterior

Don’t just turn off your water sources inside. If your furnace fails while you’re away, water in the pipes could freeze and potentially burst the pipes causing extensive damage. After you have turned off the main source, open up every faucet and drain the water lines. Go through your home and make sure the toilets, water heater (turn off the gas or electric supply first), and the expansion tank have all been drained.

Safety Checks

Walk around the home and unplug any appliances or gadgets including microwaves, TVs, and even your oven.  This will avoid the risk of fire in the event of a faulty switch or a rodent gnawing on the wires. For a very long absence, experts suggest turning off gas hot water heaters completely. Hot water heaters use a lot of energy, just keeping water in the tank hot. For gas water heaters, the simplest option is to switch the unit to “pilot”.

Clean It Up

Don’t keep any food that is likely to go bad while you’re away. Empty your freezer. If the electric fails in your absence and then is restored, the food in your freezer will thaw and refreeze, which is very dangerous. If you must keep food in your freezer, place a coin on top of a frozen ice cube tray. If the ice cube melts while you’re away, the coin will sink into the ice cube and will freeze inside of it once the power kicks back on. If this happens you will know that there was a power outage while you were away and now you can discard any frozen foods.

Remove any items that could freeze in your absence such as beer bottles, paint containers, sodas, and mineral water. These items could burst and cause damage to your home.

Handle the Outside

Store outdoor furniture such as tables, chairs, hammocks, and delicate garden ornaments inside a garage, shed or storage unit. A strong wind could blow these pieces away or they can become damaged in a storm.

Smoke & Soot

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Knowing the Difference: Smoke & Soot

Most people do not know this but there are two types of smoke and they are day and wet because of this there are two types of soot residues after fires. Even though there are little differences between each one has different procedures for each condition. SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties will be able to test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage has occurred and what procedure to use on the present smoke or soot residue.

Types of Smoke and Soot Residue

  • Wet Smoke: Plastic & Rubber
    • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke Paper and Wood
    • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire Residue Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
    • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Flood Facts

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, out in the country, or even in the desert, there is a potential for flooding. Anywhere it can rain, it can flood.

A variety of events can cause flooding, like: heavy rains, when ocean waves come onshore, if snow melts too fast, or when damns or levees break. A flooding event may occur over a long period and could last days, weeks or longer.

The most dangerous type of flood, a flash flood, happens quickly with little or no warning. Flash floods are the top weather-related killer in the U.S. since they can roll boulders, tear out trees and destroy buildings and bridges. A flash flood is the rapid flooding of low-lying areas in less than 6 hours, caused by intense rainfall from a thunderstorm or several thunderstorms.

At least 25% of the businesses that close after an event like a flood never reopen their doors. As little as one-inch of water can cause costly damage to your property. Over the past 5 years the average flood claim was more than $75,000.

With many years of experience, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have restored flood damaged homes and businesses from coast to coast. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure if not treated quickly and properly. If a flood strikes your home or business, call your local SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties! (360)533-8667

House Fire

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Once your home or business is damaged by a fire, your top priority is getting your property cleaned and repaired. In many cases, this desire leads people to pursue DIY cleanup projects. If this were your planned method, you should reconsider this course of action.  Can you do all of this yourself and can you do it properly?

1. Water Removal: Standing water left behind by the fire extinguishing efforts of the local fire department have several important ramifications. The resulting water damage can affect furniture, electronics, clothing, drywall, ceilings, flooring, and more. Water removal must be done quickly. SERVPRO of Grays Harbor &Pacific Counties utilizes water pumps, wet-vacs, high-velocity fans and dehumidifiers to extract the water and moisture quickly, thereby mitigating the damage.

2. Smoke Damage: The smoke damage that results from a fire can be quite substantive. In fact, the smoke left behind can become embedded in your furniture, flooring, carpets, and walls. If left unaddressed, this can remain in your property for years. Soot, another by-product of specific fires, needs special attention for proper clean up to avoid staining of walls and furniture. Effectively removing smoke necessitates the use of professional procedures and products  SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties  crews have in their arsenal.

3. Salvageable Goods: In many cases, homeowners who seek to complete the remediation process on their own will throw away items that are salvageable. Don't make this mistake. Instead, allow SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties  to assist you with this aspect of the restoration process. We will assess, inspect and track all of your items in our content tracker.  This inventories affected household items and classifies them into non-salvageable, salvageable or questionable lists. Items can be containerized and cleaned at our facility.

4. Time Efficiency: If you attempt to complete the fire restoration process without professional assistance, the project will take a lot of time and probably lack positive results. However, hiring SERVPRO of Grays Harbor &Pacific Counties to put your home back in a healthy condition after fire damage enables you to feel confident in the restoration. Consider the effort, equipment, and training involved in successfully restoring your home to its pre-fire condition.

BE PREPARED BEFORE DISASTER OCCURS

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

While you are away on vacation, the last thing you want to worry about is water damage to your home. Unfortunately, a water loss can strike at any time, whether or not you are present for it. Here are a few tips you can use to minimize the potential of water damage to your home while you are away.

Quick pre-departure home inspection

After you have bought your plane tickets and packed your luggage, make sure to do a quick inspection around your home for potential problematic areas. Have a look at the pipes under your sinks, look for any issues with your water heater or furnace, inspect the supply lines that connect your major appliances and check the gutters and roof for any leaks, blockages or abnormalities.

This quick step can greatly reduce the potential for damage while you are away and give you peace of mind in the process.

Turn off the water main

An easy way to insure that you have no water related issues while you are away is to simply turn the water main off. It may be days before someone discovers standing water in their home, and turning off the water main on the way out the door will eliminate the potential to find unwanted surprises when they return.

Hire a house sitter

It’s always a good idea to have a trusted friend, family member or neighbor keep an eye on your home while you are away. Even better if they can stop in once or twice a day to make sure everything is in order. Make sure that whoever you choose receives adequate instructions and emergency contact information.

Nobody wants to return to their home after a fun vacation to find water damage, but sometimes, despite best efforts, they can still happen.

If you do return from your vacation to find water damage in your home, stay calm and contact a reputable water restoration contractor such as SERVPRO OF GRAYS HARBOR AND PACIFIC COUNTIES immediately. The longer you wait, the more there is a chance for secondary damage.

We are water damage specialists who get started promptly to get your property dry and back to pre-water-damage condition. We use advanced water removal and drying equipment and implement the art of drying principles to get your property dried quickly. If you have experienced a water related disaster in your home, don't delay, call us today  360-533-8667

Be prepared for rain!

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Your home's gutters help catch rainfall and ensure that it stays far away from the foundation of your home. However, they can't effectively perform their job if they're clogged with ice or debris that piled up over the course of the seasons. Clean gutters by spraying a hose through them from the bottom up. You can also use a trowel to scoop out anything that's clogging your gutters, or purchase a cleaning tool specifically designed for your gutters and attach it to your hose.

Before the rainy season begins, it's crucial that you check your home for signs of leakage. It's best to fix a leak early on, as leaving it to worsen could result in flooding, mold and mildew, and even collapsed ceilings. Scan your ceilings for water marks and look for peeling paint. You should also venture outside of your home and look at your roof for telltale signs. Check out the ridges and see if there are any cracks. Look for loose, curled or missing shingles, which can signal roof damage and allow water to enter the home.

Do you know where your shutoffs are?

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Knowing where your shutoffs are in your commercial building could save you thousands of unnecessary damage to your building.

Often times building owners will rely on the Fire Department to come in and shut off the water to the buildings once a loss has occurred.

Knowing where your shutoffs are and clearly marking them enables the building owner to shut off water several minutes before first responders can.

In the case of sprinklers that malfunction and turn on, just 1 minute less of water flowing could cut days off of a drying project.

If you don't already , make sure you put together a plan of where the following shutoffs are:

  • Gas

  • Water

  • Electricity

Commercial buildings often times require elevated training and equipment to dry and repair.

HVAC Systems

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Mold in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems can cause health effects. When the furnace or air conditioner is turned on,  microscopic mold spores can blow out of the air ducts and circulate through the air, where they are easily inhaled.

Keeping your Ducting and the Intake clean is vital to reducing the amount of contamination your HVAC system has.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

SERVPRO specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Summer Time

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

With summer approaching, it's time to consider how to keep your lawn and garden in tip top shape while also considering how to keep your water bill down. Here are a few tips from Popular Mechanics on how (http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/lawn-garden/how-to/g559/9-water-conserving-tips-for-summer-gardening/):

  • Don't over water - a good rule of thumb is that a lawn needs 1 inch of water a week and perennial plants and shrubs will need from 1 inch to 2 inches a week. When in doubt, keep the plant's soil lightly moist and see how it responds. Over-watering is just as bad as under-watering; it leads to root rot and soil compaction that robs the roots of air.
  • Water in the morning - If you water while it's (relatively) cool outside, water can soak in before it evaporates on the surface. And if you do it in the morning, that helps the plant to take up the water during the day.
  • Don't waste water - Don't soak the plant's foliage; it does little good. If you see water puddling or running off, stop; let the water soak in before resuming. Likewise, water that runs off your lawn or off the top of a flower bed onto paved surfaces does no good. The same applies to running lawn sprinklers: Water your lawn, not the side of your house or the driveway.

BE PREPARED BEFORE DISASTER OCCURS

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

About Our Mold Remediation Services

SERVPRO specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Summer Time

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

Fortunately SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties professionals have the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Inspection & Damage Assessment
Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose or other organic material and water which can be hidden in plain view.

Mold Containment
Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the clean up process.
Air Filtration
Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties technicians utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.

Removing Mold & Mold Infested Materials

How to avoid fire damage in your home?

5/8/2020 (Permalink)

Having a fire in your home or business can happen fast and unexpected. There is something little or no warning, so knowing how to help avoid it is a very smart idea.

Test your smoke alarms.

Properly maintain your smoke alarms by testing the batteries once a month. If they’re not working, replace them immediately.

Inspect heating sources.

Regardless of what kind of primary heating you have in your home, an annual inspection will reduce your risk of fire.

Keep the stove and oven clear.

Don’t leave anything flammable near the stove or oven. Make sure curtains don’t hang over the stove, and never rest towels or a cookbook on the stove.

Stay in the kitchen.

Don't leave a hot cooking surface unattended. Whether it’s a pot on the stove or an electric griddle, you need to be close by. If you have to leave the room, take the pot off the stove or turn off the griddle first.

Check the dryer.

If you have a gas-powered dryer, have it inspected once a year to make sure all connections are secure. No matter what type of dryer you have, always clean out the lint trap after a load is finished. Regularly check behind and around the dryer for pockets of lint or items of laundry that have fallen under or behind.

Maintain cords.

Regularly check the condition of cords and watch out for frayed wires: repair or replace cords with frayed wires immediately. Electrical cords can produce heat, so don’t trap them under a rug or between furniture and the wall.

Be careful with candles.

Never leave candles unattended and always keep them away from flammable items like blankets and curtains. Place candles in secure, tip-proof holders and extinguish them before leaving or going to sleep.

Use the fireplace responsibly.

To keep errant sparks from escaping, install a durable metal fire screen in front of your fireplace. Don’t leave a fire unattended, and give ashes ample time to cool down before disposing of them. Always place fireplace ash in a dedicated metal container that isn’t used for any other household refuse.

Keep fire extinguishers handy.

Stock key areas of your home with fire extinguishers. At the very least, keep one in the kitchen and others near high-risk areas like a fireplace. Regularly review the instructions and make sure all members of the home know how to properly use the extinguisher.

If you have a fire, water, mold, or asbestos disaster, give SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties a call today at (360)533-8667

Flood Facts

BE PREPARED BEFORE DISASTER OCCURS

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

Be prepared for rain!

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

Mold in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems can cause serious health problems.

Summer Time

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

Safe Home Heating Tips

Home fires often occur during the cold winter months due to dangerous heating equipment or unsafe practices. Here are some important safety tips to help keep your home safe and warm this winter:

Never use flammable liquids or excessive amounts of paper to start or accelerate a fire.
Keep flammables away from heat sources. Wood stoves require a 36” clearance from combustible surfaces.
The use of kerosene heaters inside the home is prohibited in California (Sec. 19881, Health and Safety Code).
Keep children away from heat sources.
Never leave a fire unattended.
Wood stoves should be UL approved.
Never attempt to heat a structure with a device that was designed for outdoor use, such as a camp stove.
Charcoal gives off lethal amounts of carbon monoxide. Do not burn it indoors.
Have a professional inspect and clean your chimney, stovepipe and/or furnace annually.
Do not attempt repairs yourself.
Keep a metal or glass screen in front of the fireplace opening. Make sure the damper is open before lighting.
Check furnace control and emergency shut-offs to be sure they are working properly.
If using a fossil fuel for heating, install and maintain carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. Make sure your home has working smoke alarms as well.

Frozen Pipes

12/13/2018 (Permalink)

Winter weather is upon us  and with that comes the usual cold weather hardships, including the risk of snow, sleet and ice along with flu season and freezing temperatures. Those low temperatures can also cause a specific plumbing issue for homeowners – frozen pipes.

A frozen pipe is a typical, yet sometimes major plumbing issue to face. When the weather is cold and the temperature dips below freezing, the water in your home’s pipes may freeze and enlarge, which can result in anything from a tiny leak to large-scale flooding.

There are several signs that can reveal a frozen pipe. If you notice a water line covered in frost or any lumps within the pipe, that is a pretty sure sign that your water pipe is frozen. While it may seem obvious to know if your water lines are frozen, just realize that not all plumbing pipes are in sight. If you turn on the sink and the water is not running, or not flowing properly, or your toilets won’t refill after a flush, that’s also an indicator that your pipes are likely frozen.

So what can you do when you think your pipes could be frozen? It is crucial to switch off the power to your water supply before you attempt to thaw your pipe in order to keep the pipe from breakingTry warming the frozen area of the pipe with heated water or packing towels that have been soaked in hot water around your water pipes. If these measures don’t solve the problem, call a professional plumber in to assess the situation. Do not attempt to use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, or anything else with an open flame, as these are fire hazards.

If the pipe has actually burst, begin soaking up the water with a mop, rags or sponges to clean up as much as you can before it causes damage. If the damage is critical, go ahead and reach out to your insurance agent and call SERVPRO of Grays Harbor and Pacific County to help address the situation. SERVPRO of Grays Harbor and Pacific County will work with you insurance agency to get you back on your feet.

The American Red Cross recommends taking these actions to keep your pipes from freezing:

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to permit warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.

  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.

  • If you will be leaving during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

If these preventative actions don’t work and you find yourself combating frozen pipes this winter, call SERVPRO of Grays Harbor and Pacific County —available 24/7/365— to help at 360-533-2209 or schedule an appointment online.

How to prevent mold

12/13/2018 (Permalink)

Mold. The very word is enough to make a person cringe.

Yes, mold can be good — it's essential in making brie and penicillin, for example, and necessary for the decomposition of organic matter in nature — but it can also be very, very bad, especially when it grows undetected in your home.

Mold spores spread easily and cannot be completely eradicated.

Mold can grow anywhere: on carpet, clothing, food, paper, and even in places you can't see, such as the backside of drywall, areas inside walls around leaking or condensing pipes, and above ceiling tiles.

Not only is a mold problem difficult and costly to fix, but mold can also produce allergens and irritants (and, rarely, toxins) that may compromise your health.

So what can you do if you're concerned about mold growing in your home?

The best approach is preventing mold before it becomes a problem. The key to mold prevention is simple: moisture control.

Here are nine ways to curb moisture indoors, and the mold that thrives on it.

1. Identify problem areas in your home and correct them. You can't mold-proof your home, but you can make it mold-resistant. Do an audit of your home: where are the problem areas? Does the basement flood? Do you notice frequent condensation on an upstairs window? Is there a water stain on the ceiling from a persistent leak? Preventing mold from growing or spreading might be as simple as ripping up carpet in a damp basement, installing mold-resistant products, or repairing damaged gutters. Or it may be a matter of major excavation and waterproofing. Whatever the case, address the problem now. It might cost some money up front, but it will surely be more costly down the road if mold continues to grow unchecked.

2. Dry wet areas immediately. Mold can't grow without moisture, so tackle wet areas right away. Seepage into the basement after a heavy rainfall, accumulation from a leaky pipe, even a spill on the carpet should be dried within 24 to 48 hours. If you've experienced a flood, remove water-damaged carpets, bedding, and furniture if they can't be completely dried. Even everyday occurrences need attention: don't leave wet items lying around the house, and make sure to dry the floor and walls after a shower. Don't leave wet clothes in the washing machine, where mold can spread quickly. Hang them to dry — preferably outside or in areas with good air circulation.

3. Prevent moisture with proper ventilation. It may be that your routine domestic activities are encouraging the growth of mold in your home. Make sure an activity as simple as cooking dinner, taking a shower, or doing a load of laundry doesn't invite mold by providing proper ventilation in your bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, and any other high-moisture area. Vent appliances that produce moisture — clothes dryers, stoves — to the outside (not the attic). Use AC units and dehumidifiers (especially in humid climates), but make sure they don’t produce moisture themselves by checking them periodically and cleaning them as directed by the manufacturer. Your energy-efficient home may be holding moisture inside, so open a window when cooking or washing dishes or showering, or run an exhaust fan.

4. Equip your home with mold-resistant products. Building a new home or renovating an old one? Use mold-resistant products like mold-resistant drywall or mold-resistant Sheetrock, and mold inhibitors for paints. Traditional drywall is composed of a gypsum plaster core pressed between plies of paper. Mold-resistant drywall is paperless — the gypsum core is covered in fiberglass, making the surface highly water-resistant. Moisture-resistant drywall is especially valuable in areas prone to wetness, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, and kitchens. Not only is traditional drywall more susceptible to mold than the paperless kind, but it is also difficult to rid of mold, and removal and replacement can be expensive. Mold-resistant gypsum board is also available; the core of the drywall is developed in such a way to prevent moisture absorption, and thus prevent mold growth.

5. Monitor humidity indoors. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 60 percent. You can measure humidity with a moisture meter purchased from your local hardware store. You'll also be able to detect high humidity by simply paying attention to potential problem areas in your home. Telltale signs of excessive humidity include condensation on windows, pipes, and walls. If you notice condensation, dry the surface immediately and address the source of moisture (for example, turn off a humidifier if water appears on the inside of nearby windows).

6. Direct water away from your home. If the ground around your home isn't sufficiently sloped away from the foundation, water may collect there and seep into your crawlspace or basement.

7. Clean or repair roof gutters. A mold problem might be a simple matter of a roof that is leaking because of full or damaged gutters. Have your roof gutters cleaned regularly and inspected for damage. Repair them as necessary, and keep an eye out for water stains after storms that may indicate a leak.

8. Improve air flow in your home. According to the EPA, as temperatures drop, the air is able to hold less moisture. Without good air flow in your home, that excess moisture may appear on your walls, windows and floors. To increase circulation, open doors between rooms, move furniture away from walls, and open doors to closets that may be colder than the rooms they’re in. Let fresh air in to reduce moisture and keep mold at bay.

9. Keep mold off household plants. They're beautiful and help keep your indoor air clean — and mold loves them. The moist soil in indoor plants is a perfect breeding ground for mold, which may then spread to other areas of your house. Instead of getting rid of your plants, try adding a bit of Taheebo tea to the water you give to your houseplants. The oil of this tree, which withstands fungi even in rain forests, helps hinder mold growth in plant soil and can be found at natural food stores.

Finally, educate yourself on your region's climate . Knowing what works for your climate and your home is an important first step. If you do run into mold let the experts at SERVPRO of Grays Harbor and Pacific County take care of it. We are available 7 days a week 24 hours a day. Call 360-533-8667!

Ventilation

11/13/2018 (Permalink)

Venting a fan into the attic is simply asking for problems. The excessive moisture will cause condensation on the roof member Venting a fan into the attic is simply asking for problems. The excessive moisture will cause condensation on the roof members, insulation and mold.

The long and short of it is that a vent fan, whether for a bathroom, a range hood or a clothes dryer, is normally removing very humid air from the room. If that air is not exhausted beyond the waterproof "skin" of your house (up through the roof beyond the shingles, or out the side of the house beyond the siding or brick), then you are not removing the moisture, you're just hiding it.

On top of that, your attic is a "cold zone"; it is not insulated or climate controlled and is generally the same temperature as the outside. So, in colder weather, the moisture in the air will precipitate out. It doesn't have to be anywhere near freezing for this to happen; just cool enough that the air being vented, when cooled to outdoor temperatures, falls below its "dewpoint" and can't hold that amount of moisture.

The end result is that it will literally "rain" inside your attic; condensation will form on the wood rafters and sheathing, and that's an open door to mold (especially considering your bathroom's already a breeding ground for all sorts of nasties that can hitch a ride out the vent fan). In just a couple of years, the mould could make your house unlivable, and your rafters will be rotting until the next severe weather could collapse the entire roof.

So, it is required by code in virtually all jurisdictions that ventilation fans terminate in a vent cap on the outside of the building. There should be no leaks in the vent line that could allow the humid air to escape into an interior space. Bringing the vent to an existing attic vent isn't enough, because the air can still mix before it leaves the space and form condensation. You must either seal the vent line to that roof vent (which would also require you to have enough roof vents that the attic can still "breathe" with the loss of the one you sealed up), or cut a new hole through the roof for a new vent cap.

Arson in Aberdeen, WA

5/25/2018 (Permalink)

In a disaster know matter how big or small the SERVPRO team will be there for you every step of the way.

On June 19, 2017, SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties was called to a home in Aberdeen, WA for a house that caught fire and luckily was only partially burnt.  The fire started outside the front door and went into the rafters and burning quite a bit of the home. The cause of the fire wasn’t an accident, the fire was arson. SERVPRO arrived on scene to help the home owner get her home back to the way it was before the incident “Like it never even happened.” Just 4 months later on  October 16,2017, SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties was called to a home in Aberdeen, WA for a house that caught fire the SERVPRO team quickly realized it was the same home they had just finished demoing and was in the process of its rebuild. The man who caught the house on fire the first time came back for another round and caught the house on fire again but this time the house was burnt to the ground. The arsonist was caught and is now spending life in prison. Luckily the woman who was in the home when the fires occurred got out safely without any injuries. After about a year the house will finally be completely rebuilt, and the home owner will finally be able to live in home.

Mold in Vacation Homes

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Take care of mold the correct way. SERVPRO can do that for you. (360) 463-9408

Having a vacation home can be fun and rewarding but also can lead to unknown damages when not properly cared for. Making sure you inspect potentially hazardous areas is the best way to prevent any mold damages to go unnoticed. For example, lets say that you are leaving your vacation home at the end of the summer and you are not planning on returning until next summer, you leave water running that has a leak. Now that the water was leaking and you didn’t know for almost a year, you come to the house COVERED in mold and previous water damage that most insurance companies don’t cover. SERVPRO of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties is here to help with the damages but we also would like to give you some tips on preventing this from happening. Clear gutter to carry water away from the house. Fix any areas where mold can grow (missing shingles, loose door frame, window-drywall separation). Set thermostat higher, this will dehumidify inside the house correctly. Look for any standing water in home (sink, shower, fridge, washing machine, and toilet). Eliminate clutter throughout the house and keep clean before departure of home.

Preventing Storm Damage

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Help keep yourself, family, and your home safe. If a emergency does happen give SERVPRO a call.

Usually there is a warning before a huge storm comes rolling in. In any case that a storm is coming, there are some ways to help prevent storm damages to your home and/or vehicles. If your home is around large bushes or trees, remove the dead branches. These dead branches will be the first to fly around in a heavy wind. Also, cut back branches that overhang onto your driveway or over your house. Secure outdoor items such as pools, trampolines, grills, picnic tables, and lawn furniture. These pose a risk to fly into the exterior walls of homes or into vehicles. Clean out gutters and other drainage areas around your home to ensure the best flow of storm water. Have sand bags on hand to prevent any water from coming into your home. Check roof for loose shingles or nails. With a heavy wind storm, loose roofing materials can be dislodged and leave openings exposed for further damage. If you do have any damages from a storm, SERVPRO of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties is only a call away (360)533-8667!

Precautions For Home

5/17/2018 (Permalink)

By following these precautions it will help keep you and you loved ones safe. We are just one call away.

There are many reasons a home could catch on fire, but here are some ways to prevent fires and be aware of your surroundings.
Fireplace: In different seasons, homeowners turn to a fireplace or stove for heat. However, the fire could pop and send embers out onto nearby kindling, furniture, paper, or rugs. If this was to happen, it’s possible that it could strike a fire. If not properly taken care of, could result in fire damage throughout the home. Make sure all fires are not left unattended, close stove/fireplace doors when not feeding the fire and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
Home Electrical System: If your electrical is not up to date or there is something wrong with your electrical and you are unaware, this could result in damage that can go unseen until there is a bigger fire loss. Always check if outlets are overloaded. Regularly check your crawl space or attack to see if any rodents have chewed on any wires.
Extension Cords: These are very helpful when you cannot reach a regular plug in but can be very dangerous if multiple items are plugged in the same extension cord. If needing to use these cords, make sure they are turned off regularly. Also, make sure you are using a high-quality cord when needing to use it for multiple items.
Space Heaters: Just like a fireplace, space heaters are used in different seasons for extra warmth throughout the house. These can become extremely dangerous because of how hot they can get. When using a space heater, make sure it is three feet away from any furniture throughout the home. Also, make sure it is out of the way of any foot traffic. These could easily get knocked face first onto a carpet or rug and start a fire with direct heat. Only stand a heater on a flat hard flooring. Do not set a space heater up on a table or counter, this makes it easier for it to be knocked over.
If you do end up in a situation where you’re needing help with your fire damage. Call SERVPRO of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties (360) 533-8667. We will be there for you and help you along the way. Fires are dangerous and the best way to protect against them is knowing the most vulnerable places are throughout your home and inspect them regularly.

Kill Mold Properly

5/17/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO can get rid of mold the correct way. Just give us a call.

If you have mold throughout your home, it is best to remove the situation before it gets any worse. If you touch a moldy surface, the next surface you touch will now have those mold spores on them. Most people believe that you can just put some bleach water on the surface, scrub it, and that will kill it. In all actuality, bleach does not kill mold, it just bleaches it. Once you try and scrub a moldy surface and then scrub onto a clean surface, you have just transferred all those mold spores. To kill and remove mold, you need special chemicals. There is also a fogging technique that prevents mold. In a situation like this, it is best to call a professional and at least let them evaluate the situation. Luckily, SERVPRO of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties can help. Our crew members have mold knowledge and have the ability to get rid of the mold with our cleaning products. Call SERVPRO today (360) 533-8667!

Safety for New Years

12/14/2017 (Permalink)

Try to be safe for New Years and take care of your loved one. Thank You for choosing SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties.

The New Year is among us and it's a time where some people get together with family and friends, light off fireworks, and have a few drinks. Some people like to say goodbye to the old year and hello to the New Year. SERVPRO of Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties is her to help make sure that your New Year is a safe and fun one all at the same time. By fallowing these few little tips, it will help your New Years be just that much safer.

Safety Precautions

  • What people tend to forget when they are out drinking and having fun is the only cure for being drunk is time. If you need to get home and don't have time to wait, get a ride from a sober driver, call a cab, or an Uber. You don't want to risk getting into an accident and hurting yourself, or someone else.
  • Try to plan a ride in advance so when you know what your plan is once it's time to leave.
  • If you have leave your car overnight, make sure to lock it. You don't want to refer to your New Years of the time your car got broken into or stolen because you forgot to lock it.
  • If you are the one throwing the New Years Party plan for guests' safety give them a place to stay or an alternative ride home. Please try not to allow drinking and driving. One drink is One to many.
  • Fireworks are sometimes a part of celebrating the New Year but keep in mind that they are dangerous, and they should only be lit and handled by someone who hasn't had any alcoholic beverages and are sober.
  • Try to have a zero Firearm policy because that is a way that somebody is going to get hurt. If people have alcoholic substances and are playing with a fire arm it's more than likely going to end up being a bad night.
  • If you have children give them a curfew for their New Year's Eve festivities. If they're old enough to drive, be sure they understand the dangers of driving on the holiday. Encourage them to stay in one location instead of hopping from party to party. The fewer place they travel to the less likely they are going to get into an accident.
  • Champagne people like to celebrate by opening a bottle of champagne, but corks can be dangerous if not popped off correctly. When popping the cork off of a bottle try to hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle, pointing it away from yourself and others to avoid poking an eye out.

Call us and we can help. We will make it look "Like it never even happened."
